Go on to the Habous Quarter, the oldest part of Casablanca, which houses the Royal Palace, before continuing along to the Mohammed V Square in the city center. Overnight in Casablanca.
Day 2: Casablanca, Rabat
After breakfast, begin your tour of Casablanca with a visit to the Museum of Judaism, the only of its kind in the Muslim world. Next, take a walk through the mellah, a neighborhood that was historically settled and shaped by Jewish populations. Make a stop at the cultural center before arriving at the Beth El synagogue. Stop for lunch in one of the local, kosher restaurants before transferring to Rabat, the capital of the country. Visit the Mohammed V Mausoleum and the UNESCO sponsored Kasbah of the Udayas, Rabat’s old medina. Overnight in Rabat. ( B )
Day 3: Rabat, Meknes, Volubilis, Fes
After breakfast, continue your tour of Rabat with a trip to the Chellah Necropolis, a royal burial ground built over the ruins of a Roman port city built in 40CE. Next, move on to the 19th century mellah, the Oudaya Kasbahs, and the medina before transferring to Meknes. Begin tour with a visit to the two Meknes mellahs, which house eight synagogues and a display of well preserved, handcrafted Talmuds and Torahs. After Meknes, move on to the Roman ruins in Volubilis, a UNESCO cultural heritage for humanity. Finally, stop by Moulay Idriss before transferring to Fes for overnight. ( B )
Day 4: Fes, City Tour
Begin your tour of Fes with a visit to the mellah, which is considerably older than the ones at Meknes and Rabat, having been built in the 15th century. At one time, it housed over 10,000 people, 40 synagogues, the Bet Din, communal ovens, ritual baths, and schools. Follow with a visit to the recently restored Ibn Danan synagogue – the oldest extant synagogue in Fes. Next, tour the vast Jewish cemetery opposite the gates of the Royal Palace and the Em Habanim synagogue. Finish up with a walking tour through the souks and tanneries, stopping along the Medersa Attarine University and ending at Foundouk Nejjarine, the shrine of Moulay Idriss II. Overnight in Fes. ( B )
Day 5: Fes, Ifrane, Midelt, Erfoud
After breakfast, Continue the Morocco Jewish Heritage tour with transfer to Erfoud, passing through many Amazigh towns and villages, including Ifrane, Azrou, and Midelt. Ifrane, nicknamed “Morocco’s Switzerland,” is a charming ski town populated by European-style houses and Azrou is known around the country for its handcraft cooperative. Continue via Midelt, passing a series of fortified villages along the Ziz River before getting to Erfoud for overnight. ( B, D )
Day 6: Erfoud, Tinjdad, Tinghir
Take an optional sunrise camel ride along the golden sand dunes in Merzouga. Then return to Erfoud for breakfast before driving to Tinghir via Rissani and Tinjdad. Tinghir is a gorgeous, 40km oasis, which boasts one of the largest palm groves in the country. Take a walk through the village, stopping in to visit the earthen houses and help the locals to feed the animals. Then explore the Todra Gorge, a 300m wall, carved deep into the High Atlas Mountains. Overnight in Tinghir. ( B, D )
Day 7: Tinghir, Dades, El Kelaa, Ouarzazate
After breakfast, take a walking tour around the city, learning about the history of Jewish and Amazigh cohabitation and visiting the Jewish cemetery. Then transfer to Ouarzazate along the route of the 1001 Kasbahs, stopping in the Dades Valley and Kelaat M’Gouna. The latter is a large village, which is famous for cultivating roses, so expect to find many fine, rose-infused products there. Overnight in Ouarzazate. ( B, D )
Day 8: Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou, Taroudant
After breakfast, begin city tour of Ouarzazate, including the Taourirt and Tifoultout Kasbahs, which are considered to be among the most beautiful kasbahs in Morocco. Next, visit the film studios where some of the most famous desert landscapes were and are still being shot. Continue on to the spectacular fortress of Ait Ben Haddou, the iconic landscape immortalized in such films as Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, Gladiator, and Alexander. Transfer west through the Souss Valley to Taroudant for overnight. ( B )
Day 9: Taroudant
After breakfast, take a day-trip to the nearby village of Arazan to visit an exclusive Amazigh synagogue normally closed to the public. Return to Taroudant and cross the city’s characteristic ramparts to arrive at the souks, where some of Morocco’s most talented craftsmen tend their art. Overnight in Tardourant. ( B )
Day 10: Taroudant, Agadir, Essaouira
After that on Morocco Jewish Heritage tour, transfer to Essaouira along the Atlantic coast. On the way pass through Agadir, one of the biggest cities in Morocco, known for its expansive beaches. ( B )
Day 11: Essaouira
This relatively small, easily navigable city is ideal for a free day. But be sure to ask your guide for some city highlights—there are many. Essaouira has got a distinct multicultural feel, resulting from the large Portuguese, French, and Jewish populations that once called it home. Its mild climate and expansive stretches of ocean sand also place it among Morocco’s top beach towns. Don’t leave without visiting the local artisans, who are known around the world for their marquetry furniture. Overnight in Essaouira. ( B )
Day 12: Essaouira, Marrakech
Late in the morning, transfer to Marrakech, the “Red City,” capital of the south, and the most popular destination in Morocco. You will have the rest of the day at your leisure, but be sure to ask your guide for recommended visits. Overnight in Marrakech. ( B )
